Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC)

Overview:

The Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC) was founded in 1978 by a broad coalition of public and private healthcare stakeholders to develop a system for collecting, organizing, and disseminating data on hospital care in Massachusetts. MHDC is a membership organization that draws participation from a broad cross-section of the Massachusetts healthcare community.

MHDC currently has four primary lines of business:

1. serving as the acknowledged neutral convener of the Massachusetts healthcare community around issues relating to health data, healthcare information technology, and health information exchange via conferences and numerous discussion Forums;
2. promoting the growth of electronic health information exchange (HIE) in Massachusetts via its role as the incubator of the original NEHEN and as the former parent company of MA-SHARE and as a Board member of the new NEHEN (see p. 18);
3. fulfilling the initial mission of meeting the health data needs of Massachusetts healthcare organizations by making custom reports and full datasets available for a wide variety of healthcare customers; and
4. providing healthcare policy consulting services to Massachusetts healthcare organizations and federal agencies.

  • 31st Annual Conference: Meeting the Challenge to Transform the Healthcare System, June 5th
  • HealthMart ’09: MHDC and New England HIMSS Present A Stimulus for EHR Deployment, October 6th
  • All-Payer Claims Databases: A Key to Healthcare Reform, December 1st

• Active discussion Forums include
  • the Care Transitions Forum,
  • CIO Forum,
  • EHR Forum,
  • e-Health Security Forum,
  • Initial Electronic Records Forum, and
  • the Operations Forum will be re-established to address ICD-10 and 5010 implementation.
• MHDC also presents or hosts presentations on
  • ARRA and meaningful use,
  • Innovator Spotlights,
  • Data Managers and User Forums,
  • Internet Professionals Forums, and
  • academic book/paper talks.

• MHDC is planning to create an on-line community of practice to facilitate the deployment of EHR systems in physician offices.
